Order of the Spear

Planning for all contingencies

LegoknightsThe Watch gathers bows and arrows in preparation to make a stand from within the unexpectedly well built General Store. As the 4th Squad takes up positions to fire from the windows of fortified shop, the veterans begin working through a plan to escape from the building and return to Pitchfork.
The discussion brings up some issues to be worked out: the few remaining survivors, the prisoners, their apparent lack of horses, large flying rats, wolves, enemy combatants, as well as meeting the rendezvous deadline in a day and a half. At a swift, steady walk it is possible to make that distance within the time frame, but not likely with the women in such condition. No doubt it will be a challenge to cross the distance while protecting the women and watching the prisoners too.
What is the result of the Watch’s discussion?

Comments

How many horses are there? We brought back three, and there are a total of seven people, right? That is, four of us, Charlie, and two survivors. And then the two prisoners, too. Is that correct? Are there any more horses anywhere? How about a wagon – did anyone see a wagon? Linfors is certain that he saw a serviceable wagon the day before, behind the general store.

First order of business: neutralize the beasties by either killing or driving them off.

Possibilities

I agree, deal with the beasts first.

Regarding transport, the prisoners will be bound and forced to follow. If they fall, they can be dragged until we take a break, then we’ll check their wounds and continue on. They can drag the whole way if they prefer it. We could always tie the rope to their scrote, that should encourage forward movement.

Possibilities

META
You cannot see into the small stable behind the blacksmith shop, but there aren’t any remaining in the street.
There is a heavy, two-wheeled cart behind the general store.

Possibilities

“Once we clear out these beasties, we put the survivors in the cart, gag and tie the prisoners – who’ll walk – and then we get out of town, making for the rendezvous point. That’s what I’ve got right now, unless something changes before we head out,” states Linfors, in a tone that lets the others know he’s made up his mind and that this is to be treated as an order.

Possibilities

Thinking about the transportation situation. If the blacksmiths smithy is burnt down, our horses were in a stable behind it. I’m not holding my breath that we have animal transportation available.
At the same time… We do have, not one, but two rangers in our group. Rangers have an uncanny knack for making friends with wild animals. Possibly even flying, dog sized rats. (Handle animal roll, adding ranger level to the roll, as a diplomacy check. -4 for magical beasts.) Given good rolls, and considering the beasts have already eaten, we may get some good protection from possible new friends.
This is of course META.

Osweald considers what Linfors is saying, and nods, but interjects “As I see it, first order of business after pushing back the threats in the hamlet, is to see how many (if any) horses are still alive. Then, put the survivors in the cart and high tail it out of here.”

Possibilities

“That’s what I said, Oz,” Linfors replies with a smile, wondering if the dwarf’s ears needed checking.

Possibilities

Denn nods in agreement, but there is a troubled look on his face, “Anyone else wondering how these guys got to town so fast last night? And if they were staged here waiting for us to leave, who was that on the hill with the spy glass?”

Possibilities

Linfors considers Denn’s comments. ‘That spyglass was far off – too far to get to town ahead of us. Maybe…’ he thinks.

“Maybe there are more of them than we’d thought. What if the three in the stocks were an advance element, for scouting, the team that came in last night was the strike force, and they have a lookout, perhaps with a relay rider, to watch the entire valley?” he postulates to the group.

“I think we ought to proceed as if there are at least the number we encountered still at large, and perhaps watching us. That assumption, however, creates a significant problem for moving out with a few horses and a single cart. I’d not like to fall into an ambush on the road with such a meager force.”

“Let’s deal with those things outside as best we can and then come back to this problem.”

Possibilities

TARGET RICH ENVIRONMENT” Osweald shouts as he sights in with his bow…

Possibilities

Almost forgot and Osweald cackles with a crazy laugh.

Possibilities

Somehow the scry is coming out distorting the real sights and sounds.

Possibilities

“With Allyxann the Over-Father standing with us, we can not fail.” Cohen chimes in. “If I fall once again, hold this in your hand,” Cohen shows the tear shaped pearl, “speak the word ‘Allyxann’, have faith in him, and I will heal.”
“Lead us Linfors, we’re with you.” With that, Cohen takes aim with his newly acquired cross bow…. (With a 3 roll for initiative…

Possibilities

Poised at a window waiting for the command to fire, Charlie appears to be deep in thought. Soon he can no longer hold back his naive questions, “Why would the Watch attack Aynemerans? Perhaps some are not as honorable as I thought them all to be. They do not follow the same edicts as those from Ralspur?”
He ponders a little more and a big smile lights up his face. “You guys took down 8 of them! One of them a Command Sergeant! WOW!”
Reon weaves her way through the shop bringing warm cider and jerked venison for the squad.

Possibilities

Now is not the time for celebration Charlie, nor refreshments Reon. Perhaps when we get back to Ralspur. Although… Pack up some of those provisions for the road. They look tasty.

(Cohen has no desire to brag about ‘taking down’ a Command Sergeant. In fact he’ll not speak of it to anyone unless it is an order, beyond the report/debrief he’ll have to provide.)

Possibilities

“Pick your targets and call them out – no reason to waste ammunition…aim” Linfors commands.

Possibilities

“Fire…”
